Often I get asked the question and try to give the most unbiased yet informative answer possible. For me it’s all about understanding my clients needs and then striking the balance between cost and quality whilst ensuring I can deliver a product that will be fit for purpose and that they will be totally satisfied with.

As a general rule if you have an idea of what to expect from the print quality of each then you wouldn’t go far wrong by considering digital print for short run jobs that are needed quickly and litho print for larger quantity runs that you have a little more time to produce. However, the above could be deemed a rather simplistic approach to the subject, as it doesn’t really allow for understanding the clients needs.

For example, if a client required 250 full colour letterheads then it may seem on the surface that digital print would be the best option and this could be a correct choice if they were producing hand written letters although could be an incorrect choice if they later wanted to run the letterheads through their own laser printer to add their own personalised letter content to. This is because the latter would involve the paper becoming heated as the letterhead was passed around the roller of the laser printer and this could result in the pre printed ink from the digital press coming off the paper because of the heating process. On the other hand if a client wanted 250 full colour flyers to use at an exhibition then the digital option would probably be the best and most cost effective available to them. Therefore, I would invite you to discuss any requirement you may have with our team before making any decision that could have adverse consequences for you.
